Michael Ende
9 questions · Literature
Michael Ende (1929 to 1995) created in „The Neverending Story“ and „Momo“ modern fairy tales of timeless power. His fantasy worlds are also clever parables: about time and money, about imagination and its enemies. „Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver“ first made him famous. His books have sold millions worldwide and been translated into more than forty languages.
Good to know: The boy Bastian saves the crumbling realm of Fantastica: the line between reader and book blurs. Ende was so unhappy with the 1984 film that he publicly distanced himself from it. A girl fights the time-thieves who rob people of their leisure. Many see „Momo“ as a prescient parable of our hectic present. With the foundling Jim Button he has grand adventures aboard the engine Emma. The Augsburger Puppenkiste made the story famous on television. His „modern fairy tales“ often wrap up clever thoughts about reality. Ende resisted being seen as merely a children’s author. He reads the mysterious book and becomes a character in the story himself.
