Michael Faraday, born into the humblest London circumstances in 1791, had almost no schooling and worked as a bookbinder's apprentice: yet became one of the greatest experimental physicists in history. He devoured the books he bound. When he was allowed to hear lectures by the famous chemist Humphry Davy, he took notes, carefully bound them and sent them to Davy, who was impressed and hired him as an assistant. Faraday's greatest discovery was electromagnetic induction: move a magnet inside a coil of wire and an electric current appears in it. This simple principle underlies practically every generator and electric motor, without Faraday, no age of electricity. From him also comes the Faraday cage named after him, which shields its interior from electric fields. Faraday was a gifted experimenter but no mathematician. He thought vividly in terms of "lines of force" and "fields": an idea the young James Clerk Maxwell later cast into elegant equations, founding all of electrodynamics. Despite his world fame, the modest, deeply religious Faraday stayed true to himself: he declined a knighthood and the presidency of the Royal Society, and refused to work on chemical weapons. All his life he cared about public education and gave legendary Christmas lectures for children. The unit of electrical capacitance, the farad, bears his name.

💡 Did you know? Faraday came from deep poverty with barely any schooling: teaching himself most of what he knew.
electromagnetic induction
A moving magnet generates current in a coil.
💡 Did you know? Faraday's discovery that magnetism can generate electricity underlies practically all power generation on Earth.
generator and electric motor
Practically all electrical power technology rests on it.
💡 Did you know? Without Faraday's induction there would be neither generators nor electric motors and almost no modern technology.
Faraday cage
It shields its interior from electric fields.
💡 Did you know? The „Faraday cage“ shields its interior from electric fields: which is why a car is safe in a thunderstorm.
bookbinder
He taught himself much of what he knew.
💡 Did you know? Before becoming a scientist, Faraday worked as a bookbinder and read the books he bound.
farad
Symbol F.
💡 Did you know? The unit of electrical capacitance, the farad, is named after him.
knighthood (declined)
He deliberately remained modest.
💡 Did you know? Faraday turned down a knighthood and the presidency of the Royal Society: he wanted to remain „plain Michael Faraday“.
