Michael Phelps

10 questions · Sports

Michael Phelps, born in Baltimore in 1985, is the most successful Olympian in history: in no sport has anyone ever won more Olympic medals. As a child he was seen as restless and fidgety; swimming became his outlet and finally his calling. Over his career Phelps won a total of 28 Olympic medals, 23 of them gold: far more than any other athlete. His masterpiece came in 2008 in Beijing, where he took eight gold medals at a single Olympics, setting a record previously thought unreachable. His body seemed made for the water: extra-long arms, big hands and feet, an enormous wingspan. But behind the successes lay a merciless training load and an exceptional competitive spirit. After his career Phelps spoke openly about his struggles with depression, helping to break the taboo around mental health in elite sport. In doing so he became an important role model off the pool deck too: an exceptional athlete who shared his vulnerability. Good to know: Phelps won gold at four consecutive Olympic Games.
