10 questions · Sports

Michael Schumacher, born in the Rhineland in 1969, is Germany's most successful racing driver and one of the greatest in Formula 1 history. His path began modestly: as a child he raced at his father's go-kart track, the father keeping the family afloat with simple jobs. From there Schumacher worked his way to the very top. Schumacher became world champion seven times: a record in titles that no one had long thought possible. His name is inseparable from Scuderia Ferrari: in the early 2000s he turned the struggling old team into an unprecedented winning machine and dominated the sport at will. In all he won 91 Grands Prix. Schumacher was famous for his meticulous work on technical set-up, his iron fitness and a sometimes uncompromising, controversial driving style. He turned Formula 1 in Germany into a mass phenomenon. In 2013 Schumacher was seriously injured in a skiing accident in the Alps, suffering life-threatening head injuries. Since then the family has kept strictly private about his condition. Millions of fans worldwide still think of him with sympathy.
