Michelangelo Buonarroti is born in Tuscany in 1475 and grows up in Florence, the pulsating heart of the Renaissance. Even as a boy his talent is so evident that he is taken into a painter's workshop and soon into the circle of the powerful Medici family. There he studies the art of antiquity: an influence that runs through his entire work. Above all, though, Michelangelo sees himself as a sculptor. From marble he draws figures of breathtaking power and life. Barely in his mid-twenties he creates the "Pietà" in St Peter's, and shortly after the colossal "David" in Florence: a statue over five metres tall that becomes a symbol of human perfection. Reluctantly he is pressed by Pope Julius II into a painting commission that makes him immortal: the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. For four years he lies on scaffolding and covers the vast surface with hundreds of figures, among them "The Creation of Adam", with the almost-touching fingers of God and man. Later he paints the monumental "Last Judgment" on the altar wall. Michelangelo works into old age, also as architect of the dome of St Peter's, and dies in 1564, almost ninety. Contemporaries reverently called him "Il Divino", the Divine One. Did you know that all his life he saw himself above all as a sculptor and took on the painting of the Sistine ceiling only reluctantly? Michelangelo’s genius shows in sculpture as much as in painting: the monumental ‘David’, the moving ‘Pietà’ and the ‘Madonna of Bruges’, the mighty ‘Moses’, plus ‘Bacchus’ and the early ‘The Torment of Saint Anthony’. His masterpiece, though, is the ‘Sistine Chapel ceiling’ with ‘The Creation of Adam’, complemented by the later ‘The Last Judgment’ and the round ‘Doni Tondo’.
