10 questions Β· Society & Everyday
Michelle Robinson grows up in modest circumstances on the South Side of Chicago, in a close, warm-hearted family that places great value on education. Hard-working and ambitious, she studies at the elite universities Princeton and Harvard and becomes a lawyer. At the firm where she works she is assigned to mentor a young summer associate: Barack Obama. The professional acquaintance turns into love, and in 1992 the two marry.
When Barack Obama is elected the first Black president of the United States in 2009, Michelle moves into the White House as First Lady: the first African American First Lady in history. She fills the role with causes of her own: she campaigns against childhood obesity, even planting a vegetable garden at the White House, supports military families and advocates for girls' education around the world.
Michelle Obama becomes one of the most popular and influential women in America: known for her approachability, her humour and her clear convictions. Her guiding phrase "When they go low, we go high" is quoted far beyond the United States.
After her husband's time in office she remains an influential public voice. In 2018 her autobiography 'Becoming' appears, becoming one of the best-selling memoirs of all time and translated into dozens of languages. As a speaker, author and role model, Michelle Obama especially inspires young people: a woman who worked her own way from the South Side to the White House.
