In Norse mythology, Midgard is the world of humans: set in the middle of the nine worlds, surrounded by a world-sea in which the mighty Midgard Serpent lurks. The gods made Midgard from the body of the primeval giant Ymir and ringed it with a wall for protection. The name lives on in the English “Middle-earth”, which Tolkien borrowed for his own Middle-earth. The wall around Midgard was meant to protect humans from the giants of the chaos beyond its borders. Midgard's creation story is drastic: from the slain primeval giant Ymir, Odin and his brothers built the world: his blood became the sea, his bones the mountains, his skull the vault of heaven, propped at its corners by four dwarves. From his eyelashes the gods wove the protective wall that gives the “enclosed middle” its name. The first humans, Ask and Embla, they shaped from two tree trunks on the shore. In the world-ocean around Midgard lurks Jörmungandr, the Midgard Serpent: a child of Loki that grew until it circled the world and bit its own tail. Its arch-enemy is Thor: on his legendary fishing trip he almost hauled it aboard, and at Ragnarök the two kill each other. Midgard sinks into the sea: yet rises again renewed and green, and the human pair Lif and Lifthrasir begin anew.
