Muhammad Ali

10 questions · Sports

Muhammad Ali, born Cassius Clay in Kentucky in 1942, was heavyweight boxing world champion and far more: one of the most influential and courageous figures of the 20th century. As a young man he already declared with confidence: "I am the greatest". In the ring Ali combined incredible speed with dancer's footwork, unusual for a heavyweight. He described his own style with the famous words that he floated like a butterfly and stung like a bee. He became heavyweight world champion three times, in legendary fights such as the "Rumble in the Jungle" against George Foreman. In 1964 he embraced Islam and cast off his birth name. At the peak of his career he refused, on grounds of conscience, to serve in the Vietnam War: a stance that cost him his title, his boxing licence and millions, but made him an icon of the civil-rights and peace movements. In his later years Ali suffered from Parkinson's disease. When he died in 2016, the whole world mourned a man who united sport, principle and charisma like almost no one else.
