Nadia Comăneci, born in Romania in 1961, made sporting history at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal as a 14-year-old. Discovered as a small, slight girl, she was drilled to perfection in the strict Romanian gymnastics system. In Montreal she achieved something previously thought impossible: for her routine on the uneven bars she was given the perfect score of 10.0: the first in the Olympic history of artistic gymnastics. The scoreboards were not even prepared for it and confusedly showed "1.00", because they were not built for a straight ten. In all, Nadia earned several such dream scores at those Games and three gold medals. Her precision, concentration and weightless-seeming ease thrilled the world and made her a star overnight. She revolutionised women's gymnastics and inspired countless girls to follow her. In 1989, shortly before the fall of the Romanian dictator Ceaușescu, Comăneci fled her homeland to the West under dramatic circumstances. To this day she is regarded as one of the most famous gymnasts in history: a symbol of sporting perfection.
