Napoleon Bonaparte

10 questions Β· History

Napoleon Bonaparte, born in Corsica in 1769, was a French general and emperor and one of the most influential figures in European history. From the turmoil of the French Revolution the brilliant commander rose to the very top and crowned himself emperor in 1804. In a series of campaigns Napoleon subjugated large parts of Europe and reordered the continent. Despite all the wars he also left lasting reforms: his law code, the "Code civil", still shapes the law of many countries today. The Russian campaign of 1812 ended, however, in catastrophe and began his decline. In 1815 Napoleon was finally defeated at the Battle of Waterloo and exiled to the remote island of Saint Helena, where he died in 1821. Good to know: Napoleon rose from general to Emperor of the French and for a period of time dominated almost all of Europe. In the turmoil of the French Revolution, Napoleon rose rapidly as a brilliant general. At his height Napoleon controlled most of continental Europe, directly or through allies.
