Ned Kelly

6 questions · History

Ned Kelly, born in 1854, is Australia's most famous outlaw. The son of poor Irish immigrants, he became the leader of a gang of „bushrangers“ who robbed banks and fought the police. He became famous for his home-made armour of plough parts, which he wore against the bullets in his last stand at Glenrowan. He was hanged in Melbourne in 1880; his last words are said to have been „Such is life“. Good to know: He came from the state of Victoria. As the son of poor Irish settlers he clashed with the law early. The heavy armour of plough parts protected his torso and head. His legs and arms were unprotected and that is where he was hit. Bushrangers hid in the bush and robbed travellers and banks. Kelly became the most famous of them all. Police cornered the gang in the town in 1880. Only Kelly survived the shootout at first: badly wounded. The execution took place in Melbourne Gaol. His reported last words: 'Such is life.'
