New Wonders

14 questions · History

In 2007, millions of people worldwide voted for the ‘New Seven Wonders of the World’: structures still standing today, from Machu Picchu and the Colosseum to the Taj Mahal. In this pack you recognise each from a photo and learn where it is and the story behind it. To finish, you name all seven at once: which also works in time mode via voice input. The new seven wonders are Chichén Itzá in Mexico, the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, the Colosseum in Rome, the Great Wall of China, Machu Picchu in Peru, the rock city of Petra in Jordan and the Taj Mahal in Agra. Good to know: Mexico's most famous Maya site, with the step pyramid ‘El Castillo’, which also served as a calendar in stone. At the equinox the staircase casts a shadow that looks like a serpent slithering down. The roughly 30-metre statue of Christ atop Corcovado mountain overlooking Rio de Janeiro, unveiled in 1931. It is repeatedly struck by lightning: its outstretched arms reach high into the sky. The largest amphitheatre of antiquity, where up to 50,000 spectators watched gladiator fights. Built in the 1st century AD.
