Nicolaus Copernicus, born in Thorn (Prussia) in 1473, was a canon, physician, lawyer and administrator and, on the side, the man who moved the Earth out of the centre of the universe. Since antiquity Ptolemy's geocentric worldview had held sway: the Earth rests motionless at the centre, and Sun, Moon and stars circle around it. Yet to explain the tangled motions of the planets, this model needed ever more complicated auxiliary constructions. Copernicus dared to think the opposite. In his model the Sun sits at the centre, and the Earth is one planet among many, moving around the Sun while spinning once a day on its own axis. This explained many observations far more simply at a stroke: but was an enormous break with church, scripture and common sense, which after all felt the Earth firmly underfoot. Out of caution Copernicus held back his ideas for decades and published his main work only at the very end of his life. "De revolutionibus orbium coelestium" appeared in 1543, the year of the author's death: legend says he held the first printed copy on his deathbed. His work triggered the "Copernican Revolution", one of the greatest intellectual upheavals in history, and paved the way for Kepler, Galileo and Newton. Humankind was no longer the centre, but the inhabitant of one planet among many.
