Novak Đoković

10 questions · Sports

Novak Đoković, born in Belgrade in 1987, learned tennis as a child amid the turmoil of war in disintegrating Yugoslavia: sometimes he trained in emptied swimming pools while bombs fell nearby. From those hard beginnings came one of the most successful players in history. Đoković holds the record for the most Grand Slam titles in men's tennis and has also spent more weeks at the top of the world rankings than anyone else. His game is marked by incredible agility, an outstanding return and seemingly inexhaustible stamina: he appears to reach every ball. For a long time he stood in the shadow of the more popular rivals Federer and Nadal and had to fight hard for his place at the top. That he caught and overtook both of them in their records over the years speaks to his mental toughness. Đoković pays extreme attention to nutrition, flexibility and mental fitness and is regarded as one of the best-prepared athletes in sport. He is the great star of Serbian tennis and a national hero at home.
