Nut

12 questions Β· Mythology

Nut is the Egyptian sky goddess who arches as a vast, star-covered female body over the earth. Her fingertips and toes touch the four points of the compass, while the earth god Geb lies beneath her. Each evening Nut swallows the sun, which travels through her body to be born anew the next morning. So she embodies the eternal cycle of setting and rebirth. As mother of Osiris, Isis, Seth and Nephthys, Nut stands at the head of the great god-stories. On coffin lids she was painted protectively over the dead, so that they too might rise again like the sun. As sky goddess, Nut arches over the earth; every evening she swallows the sun, to give birth to it anew each morning. Good to know: Nut is the night sky itself: often shown as a woman arching over the earth. In the evening Nut swallows the sun, which travels through her body to be born anew at dawn. Her brother and husband is the earth god Geb, who lies beneath her. With Geb, Nut bore the four gods around whom the famous Osiris myth revolves.
