Osiris

12 questions · Mythology

Osiris is the Egyptian god of the underworld, the afterlife and rebirth. He once ruled Egypt as a good king and taught the people agriculture and laws: until his jealous brother Seth murdered him. His faithful wife Isis gathered the dismembered body parts and revived him with magic long enough to conceive their son Horus. Osiris then became ruler of the realm of the dead, who judges the deceased. At the famous judgement of the dead, every person's heart is weighed against the feather of truth. As a god who dies and is resurrected, Osiris gave the Egyptians hope of eternal life. Because Osiris rose again after his murder, he became the Egyptians’ symbol of hope and the lord of the realm of the dead. Good to know: As lord of the afterlife, Osiris judges the dead and promises the righteous eternal life. He is usually shown with green skin: the colour of sprouting life. Osiris, legend says, ruled as a good king and taught people agriculture, wine and laws. His beneficent reign was seen by the Egyptians as a golden age.
