Oskar Schindler

10 questions · History

Oskar Schindler, born in Zwittau in Moravia in 1908, was a bon vivant, spy and war profiteer and still saved about 1,200 people from death. Before the war the Sudeten German spied in Czechoslovakia for the German intelligence service, the Abwehr, and joined the Nazi Party in 1939. After the invasion of Poland he took over an enamelware factory in Kraków, employed cheap Jewish forced labourers from the ghetto and grew rich. But the more brutal the persecution became, the more his business turned into a rescue operation. With bribes, charm and black-market goods he kept the SS away from his workers, including Amon Göth, commandant of the Płaszów camp. When the Red Army approached in 1944 he moved his factory to Brünnlitz in Moravia and took the people on his famous list with him. His wife Emilie cared for the sick and rescued half-frozen prisoners from a train. Almost all of them survived. After the war Schindler failed as a businessman in Argentina and Germany and lived on the support of those he had saved. In 1993 Yad Vashem honoured him and his wife as “Righteous Among the Nations”. He is buried on Mount Zion in Jerusalem. Steven Spielberg's film “Schindler's List” starring Liam Neeson made him world-famous.
