Otto the Great

9 questions · History

Otto the Great, born in 912, is regarded as the founder of the Holy Roman Empire. In 955 on the Lechfeld near Augsburg he crushed the invading Hungarians and thus secured his realm. In 962 he had himself crowned emperor by the Pope in Rome: the first of a line of emperors that would last more than 800 years. Otto wisely based his power on the bishops of the imperial church and turned the East Frankish kingdom into the foundation of later Germany. Good to know: With this he deliberately revived the Roman imperial tradition. He was the first of a long line of Holy Roman Emperors. The victory ended the devastating Hungarian raids into Central Europe. It cemented Otto’s standing as protector of Christendom. It lasted (through many changes) until 1806. Later it was called the „Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation“. He thereby consciously invoked Charlemagne. Aachen remained the coronation site of German kings for centuries. Bishops were educated and left no hereditary claims. This „imperial church system“ shaped the empire for a long time.
