Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known the world over simply as Pelé, was born in Brazil in 1940 and grew up in great poverty. His family could not afford a real ball: the boy practised with a sock stuffed with rags. That child became perhaps the most famous footballer in history. At just 17, Pelé led Brazil to the World Cup title in 1958, scoring twice in the final. It was the start of a unique career: he won the World Cup three times (1958, 1962 and 1970) and remains to this day the only player ever to do so. In Brazil he is reverently called "O Rei", the King. For almost his entire career he played for Santos FC, winning countless titles. Legends surround the number of his goals: some speak of around a thousand strikes in competitive and friendly matches. Pelé became a global icon far beyond sport, an ambassador of "the beautiful game", as he called football itself. FIFA honoured him as Footballer of the Century. He died in 2022 and was mourned around the world. Good to know: He is seen as the country's greatest player.
