Periodic Table (Common): Hydrogen is the lightest and simplest of all elements: a colourless, odourless gas. It is seen as a future energy carrier and burns to pure water. Helium is an extremely light, unreactive noble gas. It fills balloons and airships and, as a liquid, cools the magnets of MRI machines. Lithium is the lightest metal and highly reactive. Today it is used above all in the rechargeable batteries of phones and electric cars. Boron is a metalloid found in compounds such as borax and boric acid. It makes glass heat-resistant and acts as a flame retardant. Carbon is the basis of all life and forms countless compounds. As a pure element it takes very different forms: from hard diamond to soft graphite. Good to know: Hydrogen is the most common element in the universe: stars like the Sun are mostly made of it. Breathe in helium and your voice briefly turns high and squeaky, because sound travels faster through it. Lithium is so light it floats on water and today it powers almost every rechargeable battery.
