Persephone
12 questions · Mythology
Persephone is the Greek goddess of both the underworld and spring: a figure between life and death. As daughter of the harvest goddess Demeter she grew up in the sunlight, until Hades carried her off into his dark realm and made her his queen.
Because she ate pomegranate seeds in the underworld, she is bound to it forever: for part of the year she reigns as queen of the dead, for the other she returns to her mother in the light. This movement between the world above and below gives the seasons their rhythm.
Thus Persephone embodies change, transience and return. In Roman mythology she corresponds to Proserpina.
As a girl Persephone was known as Kore, before Hades made her queen of the underworld.
Good to know: As Persephone was picking flowers, the earth opened and Hades carried her off into his realm. Zeus had secretly consented to the abduction, to the grief of the unsuspecting Demeter. At the side of Hades, Persephone rules the dead: but in summer she returns to the light. Few mortals dared say her name aloud: she was reverently called only „the maiden“ (Kore).
