Peter the Great

10 questions · History

Peter the Great, born in 1672, was Tsar of Russia and one of the most energetic reformers in history. The restless ruler, over two metres tall, wanted to turn backward Russia into a modern European power. To that end Peter even travelled to Western Europe in disguise to study crafts, shipbuilding and technology. Back in Russia he pushed through far-reaching reforms: he built a war fleet and a modern army, reformed administration and the economy, and forced Western customs on the nobility; the beard tax is famous. On the Baltic he had a completely new capital built: the magnificent Saint Petersburg, "Russia's window to Europe". Under Peter, Russia rose to become a European great power. He died in 1725. Good to know: Peter the Great ruled Russia as tsar and later as its first „emperor“. Peter forced a backward Russia to modernise on the Western European model. On marshy ground Peter built the new capital of St Petersburg: his „window to Europe“. Peter built Russia a navy: he had even worked in Western European shipyards himself.
