What can we know, and what is actually real? The philosophical movements (the many doctrines ending in -ism) give very different, often irreconcilable answers. Knowing them means knowing the basic patterns of Western thought. On knowledge, two camps disagree. Empiricism sees sense experience as the only source of certain knowledge: the mind starts as a blank slate. Rationalism holds instead that reason is the most important source: some truths, mathematical ones for instance, are grasped without looking outside at all. Between them stands Skepticism, which doubts on principle that certain knowledge is possible at all. Pragmatism sidesteps the quarrel: it measures truth by whether an idea works in practice. On the question of reality, Materialism and Idealism face each other. One declares that only matter, the physical, truly exists; the other sees ideas, mind or consciousness as what is fundamental. Determinism claims that everything that happens is predetermined by causes: which turns free will into a problem. The whole branch dealing with such questions of being and reality is called Metaphysics. And the human being? Existentialism starts from the claim that existence precedes essence: we arrive without a finished blueprint and have to design ourselves. Nihilism goes one step further and denies any objective meaning or value to existence at all.
