The phoenix is a legendary bird that, at the end of its long life, bursts into flames and is reborn from its own ashes. It is thus the most beautiful symbol of death and rebirth, of immortality and eternal renewal. The myth comes from ancient Egypt (the bird „Bennu“) and from Greco-Roman antiquity. Legend says only a single phoenix ever lives at a time, often for 500 years, before the cycle begins anew. To this day the phoenix stands for hope and new beginnings: „like a phoenix from the ashes“ has become a common saying. Herodotus brought the story from Heliopolis to Greece: scarcely believing it himself: every few centuries the bird builds a nest of myrrh and spices, burns in it and rises rejuvenated from its ashes, before carrying the remains to the “city of the sun”. Early Christians cited it as a witness of resurrection; catacombs show it beside palms. And pop culture keeps it warm: from Dumbledore's Fawkes to the proverb of the phoenix from the ashes. Good to know: The phoenix is a magnificent, often red-and-gold bird of great beauty and long life.
