Pieter Bruegel the Elder

18 questions · Art

Pieter Bruegel the Elder is born around 1525 in the Netherlands. Little is known of his youth, but as a young painter he makes a journey over the Alps to Italy: the vast mountain landscapes he sees there reappear again and again in his pictures. Back in Antwerp and Brussels he becomes the most important Netherlandish painter of his time. Bruegel paints differently from the elegant Italian masters. His great theme is ordinary people: peasants at a wedding, at a dance, at the harvest, children at their games. He shows country life with a keen, often humorous eye, but without mocking it. This preference earned him the nickname "Peasant Bruegel". His pictures are true teeming scenes, packed with dozens of figures and little stories. In "Netherlandish Proverbs" he hides over a hundred sayings as painted scenes; "Children's Games" shows dozens of old games at a glance. At the same time he paints magnificent landscapes such as "The Hunters in the Snow", among the finest winter pictures in art. Bruegel dies young, in 1569. Yet he founds a whole dynasty of painters: his sons and grandsons carry the art on for generations. Did you know that several of his seemingly harmless landscapes hide dramatic events on closer inspection: in "The Fall of Icarus", for example, the hero drowns almost unnoticed in a corner of the picture while the world simply carries on working? Bruegel painted the life of ordinary people and the sweep of the landscape: above all ‘The Hunters in the Snow’, together with ‘The Harvesters’, ‘The Peasant Wedding’ and ‘Children’s Games’. His moral panoramas range from ‘Netherlandish Proverbs’ through ‘The Tower of Babel’, ‘The Triumph of Death’ and ‘The Blind Leading the Blind’ to ‘The Magpie on the Gallows’, ‘The Massacre of the Innocents’ and the furious ‘Dull Gret’.
