Pluto

12 questions · Mythology

Pluto is the Roman god of the underworld and of the wealth of the earth. As lord of the realm of the dead he receives the deceased: but because the earth's minerals also come from the depths, he is at the same time a giver of gold, silver and fertility. His name is linked to the Greek „Plutos“ (wealth). Like his Greek model Hades, he carried off the goddess Proserpina into the underworld and made her his queen. Pluto corresponds to the Greek Hades. The distant dwarf planet Pluto, discovered in 1930, is named after him. Good to know: Pluto rules the realm of the dead and commands the treasures beneath the earth. Her half-yearly movement between the worlds above and below explained the changing of the seasons. Pluto is the Roman counterpart of the Greek god of the underworld, Hades. Because gold, silver and fertility come from the earth, the underworld god was also a giver of wealth. Like Hades, Pluto carried off the goddess Proserpina and made her mistress of the underworld. Its astronomical symbol „PL“ also honoured the astronomer Percival Lowell.
