Poseidon

12 questions · Mythology

Poseidon is the Greek god of the sea, earthquakes and horses: after Zeus the mightiest of the Olympian gods. With his trident he commands the oceans and storms; a single strike can churn the sea or make the earth quake. As the brother of Zeus he received dominion over the waters when the world was divided. Sailors feared and revered him alike, for he could bless a voyage or destroy a ship with a storm. Poseidon is also the father of many monsters and the creator of the horse. In the contest for the city of Athens he lost to Athena. In Roman mythology he corresponds to Neptune, after whom the outermost planet is named. Poseidon gained rule over the sea by lot in the division of the world. After the Trojan War he pursued the homeward-bound hero Odysseus with relentless anger. Good to know: Poseidon rules the seas and storms, makes the earth quake and is regarded as the creator of the horse. He was called the „Earth-Shaker“: every earthquake was attributed to his wrath. With the three-pronged trident forged by the Cyclopes, Poseidon stirs up the sea or calms it.
