Princess Diana
10 questions Β· Society & Everyday
Diana Spencer is born into an English aristocratic family in 1961 and works as a young woman as, among other things, a nursery assistant, when life catapults her into a fairy tale that soon becomes a drama. In 1981, aged just 20, she marries the heir to the British throne, Prince Charles. The wedding is watched on television by hundreds of millions of people worldwide: Diana becomes the most famous woman in the world overnight.
As Princess of Wales she gives birth to two sons, William and Harry, and becomes a public favourite. But behind the glamorous facade the marriage breaks down. Diana struggles under the pressure of the royal household and the press, and later speaks openly about her difficult years. In 1996 her marriage to Charles ends in divorce.
Diana uses her enormous fame for humanitarian causes and becomes known as the "Queen of Hearts". She champions people with AIDS (her public, ungloved handshake with an HIV patient helps break down prejudice) and campaigns against landmines; famous are the images of her walking through a minefield in Angola. Her warm, approachable manner sets her apart from the aloof etiquette of the court.
In 1997 Diana dies at just 36 in a car crash in Paris. Her sudden death triggers an unprecedented wave of worldwide grief; millions mourn. To this day she is regarded as one of the most influential and beloved figures of the modern monarchy and as a woman who made the British royal family more human.
