Qin Shi Huang

9 questions · History

Qin Shi Huang, born in 259 BC, was the first emperor of a unified China. In 221 BC he subdued the rival kingdoms and created a centrally governed state. With an iron hand he standardised script, weights and currency, joined early border walls into the forerunner of the Great Wall and had the world-famous Terracotta Army made to guard his tomb. His name lives on to this day: „China“ derives from his Qin dynasty. Good to know: He united the warring kingdoms into a single state. His title „Shi Huangdi“ means „First August Emperor“. Some 8,000 life-size clay soldiers were to protect him in the afterlife. In 1974 farmers digging a well stumbled upon it by chance. He had existing walls joined into a vast protective barrier. Countless labourers died in the building. Even the axle width of carts was prescribed. This standardisation held China together for millennia. „Qin“ is pronounced roughly like „Chin“. So the country still bears the name of its first emperor. Only practical works such as on farming and medicine were spared.
