No band fused hard rock so lavishly with opera, choral singing and stadium anthems as Queen from England. At its centre stood frontman Freddie Mercury, born Farrokh Bulsara, with one of the most expressive voices in rock history: flanked by guitarist Brian May, who built his own guitar as a teenager, and drummer Roger Taylor. Their six-minute ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ had no conventional chorus and was thought utterly mad on release: today it is a classic. Add to it sing-along anthems like ‘We Will Rock You’, the disco hit ‘Another One Bites the Dust’ and the moving ballad ‘The Show Must Go On’, which Mercury recorded despite grave illness. Their set at Live Aid in 1985 is regarded by many as the greatest live moment in rock history. The 2018 film ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ brought their story to a new generation. Good to know: Mercury was famed for his huge vocal range and stage presence. He died of AIDS-related illness in 1991. The song had no conventional chorus and was seen as revolutionary.
