Ra

12 questions · Mythology

Ra is the sun god and one of the highest deities of ancient Egypt: creator of the world and king of the gods. Day after day he sails his solar barque across the sky, bringing light and life. But the journey never ends: by night Ra's barque crosses the dangerous underworld, where he must defeat the huge chaos serpent Apophis night after night so that the sun can rise again in the morning. So Ra embodies the eternal cycle of death and rebirth. The pharaohs traced their rule to Ra and called themselves „Son of Ra.“ Later he merged with the state god Amun into Amun-Ra, the most powerful god of Egypt. The sun god is often depicted with a falcon head and the sun disc; the pharaohs saw themselves as sons of Ra. Good to know: Ra is the sun itself and at once creator of the world and king of the gods. By Egyptian belief, humankind arose from the tears of Ra. Ra crosses the sky in his solar barque; at night he travels through the twelve hours of the underworld. Beside pyramids archaeologists dug up real wooden „solar barques“ meant to serve the dead pharaoh.
