Rafael Nadal, born on the Spanish island of Mallorca in 1986, was coached by his uncle Toni, who taught him early to play left-handed although he is actually right-handed. That boy became the greatest clay-court player in history. Nadal's trademarks were his boundless fighting spirit, his physical power and an extreme forehand topspin that makes the ball bounce metres high. On the red clay he was almost unbeatable: at the French Open in Paris he set a record of 14 titles that seems made for eternity. In all he won 22 Grand Slam titles. He is reverently called the "King of Clay". His epic duels with Roger Federer (the elegant Swiss on one side, the battling Spaniard on the other) are among the greatest the sport has ever seen, for all their mutual respect. Nadal is known for his down-to-earth nature and his small, unvarying rituals on court. Countless injuries repeatedly forced him to take breaks: yet each time he fought his way back with stubborn determination, until he retired at the Davis Cup in Málaga in November 2024. Good to know: Born on Mallorca.
