9 questions · Literature

Rainer Maria Rilke (1875 to 1926) is considered one of the greatest poets in the German language. Born in Prague, he created in the „Duino Elegies“ and the „Sonnets to Orpheus“ peaks of modern poetry. His „The Panther“ is one of the most famous German poems, and the „Letters to a Young Poet“ are still read worldwide today. Good to know: He ranks among the most influential poets of modernism. Rilke also wrote in French and worked for a time for the sculptor Rodin. He began them in 1912 at Duino Castle and completed them only ten years later. „Who, if I cried out, would hear me among the angels’ hierarchies?“ is their famous opening. Ten letters to an aspiring author: still a classic on the art of living. Rilke’s advice to „go into yourself“ is still fondly quoted. The gaze of the animal caged in the Paris zoo becomes an emblem of captivity. It is regarded as the most famous of his „thing-poems“. In loosely joined notes the narrator circles around fear, childhood and death. The novel is seen as an early peak of literary modernism.
