Ramesses III

9 questions ยท History

Ramesses III ruled from about 1187 to 1156 BC and counts as the last great pharaoh. His reign saw the onslaught of the Sea Peoples, which brought down half the eastern Mediterranean world: Egypt held, and the battle is depicted in exhaustive detail on the walls of his mortuary temple at Medinet Habu. His reign also produced the first documented strike in history: when the tomb workers of Deir el-Medina were not paid, they downed tools. Ramesses himself fell victim to a murder plot, settled beyond doubt only in 2012 by a CT scan. Good to know: Their onslaught brought down the Hittite Empire and many cities of the Levant. Who they were remains one of archaeology's great open questions. It is one of Egypt's best-preserved temples, with original colours intact. It was built so defensibly that a whole village later took refuge inside. The conspirators wanted to put a different son on the throne. The trial records survive: the culprits were condemned, but the plot had succeeded. It was instigated by a secondary wife who wanted her own son to be king.
