Raoul Wallenberg

10 questions · History

Raoul Wallenberg, born in 1912 in Lidingö near Stockholm into one of Sweden's most influential banking families, saved tens of thousands of Jews in Budapest in 1944 and then vanished without trace in Soviet custody himself. He had studied architecture at the University of Michigan in the USA and was working as a businessman when, in summer 1944, the Swedish government sent him to Budapest with the backing of the American War Refugee Board. Adolf Eichmann had just had hundreds of thousands of Hungarian Jews deported to Auschwitz there. Wallenberg issued specially designed Swedish protective passports that placed their holders under Sweden's protection, and rented about 30 buildings that he declared extraterritorial Swedish territory. He negotiated, bribed and bluffed, pulling people out of deportation trains and death marches. Together with other diplomats such as the Swiss Carl Lutz, he helped tens of thousands to survive. When the Red Army took Budapest, Soviet counter-intelligence arrested him in January 1945. He never returned. Moscow later claimed he had died in the Lubyanka prison in 1947; this has never been proven. In 1981 the USA made him its second honorary citizen after Winston Churchill, and Yad Vashem honoured him as Righteous Among the Nations. Sweden only officially declared him dead in 2016.
