Reinhard Heydrich

11 questions · History

Reinhard Heydrich, born into a family of musicians in Halle an der Saale in 1904, was the cold organiser of Nazi terror, for many historians the real architect of the Holocaust. His father ran a music conservatory, and he himself was an excellent violinist. Heydrich joined the navy but was dishonourably discharged from the Reichsmarine in 1931 over an affair with a woman. Himmler hired him the same year to build up the SS Security Service. It grew into an apparatus that combined the Gestapo, the criminal police and the SD: the Reich Security Main Office, founded in 1939. From there Heydrich directed the Einsatzgruppen in Poland and the Soviet Union. In July 1941 Göring instructed him to prepare the “Final Solution of the Jewish Question”; on 20 January 1942 he chaired the Wannsee Conference, where the deportation and murder of Europe's Jews was coordinated. At the same time, from 1941, he ruled occupied Bohemia and Moravia by terror as acting Reich Protector. On 27 May 1942 Czechoslovak paratroopers attacked him in Prague: Operation Anthropoid. Heydrich died a week later. The revenge was horrific: the village of Lidice was wiped out, and the murder of the Jews in the General Government was given the code name “Operation Reinhard”.
