Rhineland-Palatinate

8 questions · Geography

Rhineland-Palatinate lies in the west of Germany and has around 4.1 million inhabitants. The capital is Mainz, where Johannes Gutenberg once invented printing with movable type: an invention that changed Europe. The Rhine runs through the state, and on it lies its most famous sight: the Loreley, a slate rock rising 130 metres above the river at St. Goarshausen. Legend says a maiden sat up there, combing her golden hair and luring boatmen to their doom with her song: Heinrich Heine turned the tale into the most famous German poem of the 19th century. In reality the spot is the narrowest and most dangerous stretch of the Middle Rhine. Above all the state is famous for wine growing: six of Germany's 13 wine regions lie in Rhineland-Palatinate, among them the Mosel, the Pfalz and Rheinhessen. Two thirds of all German wine comes from here. To the west the state borders France and Luxembourg. Did you know that the Upper Middle Rhine Valley with its castles is a UNESCO World Heritage site?
