Roald Amundsen, born in Norway in 1872, was the most successful polar explorer of his time. Cool, meticulous and superbly prepared, he reached goals where others failed. His greatest triumph was the race to the South Pole: on 14 December 1911 Amundsen became the first person to reach the geographic South Pole: about a month before his British rival Robert Falcon Scott, who died on the way back. Earlier Amundsen had been the first to sail through the legendary Northwest Passage, the sea route north of Canada. In 1928 Amundsen vanished on a flight into the Arctic while taking part in a rescue mission. His body was never found.
