Robert Falcon Scott, born in England in 1868, was a British naval officer and Antarctic explorer whose name stands for bravery and tragedy alike. He waged the most famous race in polar history against the Norwegian Roald Amundsen: the struggle for the South Pole. Scott reached the geographic South Pole in January 1912: but to his dismay he found the Norwegian flag already there. Amundsen had been about five weeks faster. On the exhausting march back through cold and storms, Scott and his companions perished, only a few kilometres from a life-saving depot. Scott's diaries, in which he wrote to the end, made him a tragic hero. The group was found only months later. Good to know: Scott was an officer in Britain's Royal Navy before becoming an Antarctic explorer. On 17 January 1912 Scott reached the South Pole: only to find Amundsen had beaten him to it. At the Pole, Scott's men found the Norwegian flag and a tent: a crushing moment. On the way back Scott and his companions died in a blizzard, just kilometres from the depot that would have saved them.
