Roger Federer

10 questions · Sports

Roger Federer, born in Basel in 1981, is for many the most elegant tennis player in history. As a teenager he was a hot-headed hothead who threw his racket around: only with iron self-discipline did he shape from that the almost weightless calm for which he became famous. Federer's game looked effortless: fluid movement, a dream of a forehand and a feel for the ball that drove opponents to despair. He won 20 Grand Slam titles and spent a record 237 consecutive weeks at the top of the world rankings. His name is especially tied to Wimbledon, where his eight titles make him the outright record winner. For many years he waged a three-way duel for supremacy with Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, regarded as tennis's golden era. The rivalry with Nadal in particular (opposite characters, deep mutual respect) thrilled millions. Federer was as loved for his fairness and modesty as for his play. When he ended his career in 2022, the tennis world bade him farewell in tears: fittingly at the side of his long-time rival Nadal.
