Rowing: competition & history
8 questions · Sports
Rowing (competition & history): Rowing was contested at the Olympics from 1900. The world body is World Rowing. The Thames duel is The Boat Race. The storied regatta is the Henley Royal Regatta.
The flagship is the Germany Eight. Rowing is held on calm, sheltered courses with several parallel lanes. Indoors you row on the ergometer. Among the best is Great Britain.
Good to know: Rowing was planned for 1896 but lost to the weather; it was contested from 1900. The body was long called 'FISA'. 'The Boat Race' has been contested in London since 1829. Henley Royal Regatta is a social event with a dress code. The 'Deutschland-Achter' is one of the most successful rowing boats in the world. Racing is on the smoothest possible water over 2000 metres: wind and waves can heavily distort a race. The rowing ergometer even has its own competitions. Germany, the Netherlands, the USA, Australia and New Zealand are also strong. World Rowing (formerly FISA) runs the World Cups and World Championships.
