Rudolf Höss

11 questions · History

Rudolf Höss, born in Baden-Baden in 1901, was the first and longest-serving commandant of Auschwitz: the largest extermination camp of the Nazi state. Even as a young man he belonged to the violent far right: in 1923 he took part in a political murder and was imprisoned for it. After an amnesty he joined the SS and learned camp duty at Dachau and Sachsenhausen. In 1940 he became commandant of the new camp at Auschwitz. Under his leadership it became a death factory: at Birkenau he had gas chambers and crematoria built and the pesticide Zyklon B used for mass murder. About 1.1 million people were murdered at Auschwitz, the vast majority of them Jews. A few metres behind the camp wall Höss lived with his wife and five children in a villa with a garden: a contrast shown powerfully by the 2023 film “The Zone of Interest”. After the war he went into hiding as a farmhand, was caught by British investigators in 1946 and testified as a witness at the Nuremberg trial. In Polish custody he wrote his memoirs, published as “Commandant of Auschwitz”. The Supreme National Tribunal in Warsaw sentenced him to death; in April 1947 he was hanged at Auschwitz, next to the first crematorium of the main camp.
