Rugby: basics

8 questions · Sports

Rugby (basics): A rugby union team has fifteen players. The try is worth 5 points; a conversion kick afterwards adds 2 more. Hand passes must go backwards or sideways; a forward pass is an infringement. Grounding the ball in-goal is a try. A penalty kick is worth three points. In a scrum the forwards of both teams push against each other to win the fed-in ball. The throw-in at the sideline is the line-out. Yes, the ball-carrier may be tackled. Good to know: In the rugby league variant there are only 13 players. After a try comes an extra kick at the posts (the „conversion“) for two more points. Since you may only pass backwards, ground is gained mainly by running and kicking forward. A try scores five points: more than any single kicking event. A drop goal from open play also scores three points. In a scrum eight forwards a side push against each other: huge forces bear on the front row. In a line-out team-mates lift the catcher high into the air. Only the ball-carrier may be tackled and only below the shoulders.
