Rugby: terms & positions
8 questions · Sports
Rugby (terms & positions): The kick after a try is the conversion. In a ruck players stand over the ball and try to heel it back with their feet. The contest around a standing carrier is the maul. The forwards win the ball in the set pieces; the 'backs' are the fast runners out wide.
The fast outside players are the backs. The link to the scrum is the scrum-half. The fly-half is the conductor: deciding on kicks, passes and moves. After a foul there is a penalty.
Good to know: The conversion is taken level with where the try was scored: central is easier. In a ruck you may only move the ball with your feet; picking it up by hand is penalised. In a maul the ball-carrier is still on his feet, surrounded by team-mates and opponents. The forwards do the hard graft in scrum and lineout: usually the heaviest players on the pitch. The backs use pace and space to break through. The scrum-half is usually the smallest, nimblest player on the team. The fly-half is the playmaker: deciding whether to run, pass or kick.
