Rügen

6 questions · Geography

Rügen is the largest island in Germany and lies in the Baltic Sea off the coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It is linked to the Hanseatic town of Stralsund by the Rügen causeway and the Rügen Bridge. World-famous are the gleaming white chalk cliffs in Jasmund National Park, above all the Königsstuhl. Further landmarks include the elegant pier at Sellin, Cape Arkona with its lighthouses and the vast Nazi-era resort complex of Prora. With its seaside resorts, beech forests and cliff coasts, Rügen is one of the most popular destinations on Germany's Baltic coast. Good to know: Rügen is clearly larger than Usedom, the second-largest. Caspar David Friedrich immortalised the chalk cliffs in a famous painting. Today's pier is a reconstruction of the historic one. Nearby once stood the Slavic temple fortress of Jaromarsburg. The Rügen Bridge is one of Germany's longest bridges. The chalk cliffs of Rügen inspired Caspar David Friedrich to paint one of his most famous pictures. Such as the Königsstuhl.
