20 questions · History
In 1917 the Russian Revolution toppled the centuries-old tsarist empire and created the world's first communist state. The First World War had drained the country: in the February Revolution Tsar Nicholas II had to abdicate, and a Provisional Government under Kerensky took over. But it continued the hated war. With the slogans “Peace, Land and Bread” and “All power to the Soviets”, the Bolsheviks under Lenin won the masses. In the October Revolution they stormed the Winter Palace in Petrograd and seized power. Russia left the war through the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, and in 1918 the Romanov tsar's family was shot. There followed a bloody civil war between the “Red” Army, led by Lenin's comrade Trotsky, and the “Whites”. In the end the communists won, and in 1922 the Soviet Union was formed. After Lenin's death, Stalin prevailed and built a dictatorship. The revolution changed not only Russia but shaped the whole 20th century: right into the Cold War. Good to know: Two upheavals followed one another that year.
