SARS & MERS

9 questions · History

Long before the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 paralysed the world, two close relatives warned of the danger posed by coronaviruses: SARS and MERS. SARS stands for „Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome“ and appeared in 2002 in southern China. The virus originally came from bats and probably jumped to humans via civet cats. It spread quickly through travellers into several countries, caused severe pneumonia and killed about one in ten of the infected. Through determined isolation and quarantine the world managed to stop the outbreak in 2003: SARS has been considered defeated since then. Ten years later, in 2012, MERS appeared on the Arabian Peninsula, the „Middle East Respiratory Syndrome“. Its pathogen comes from dromedaries (camels) and still crosses to humans again and again today. MERS is less contagious but even deadlier: about one in three of the infected dies. Both diseases showed the world impressively how dangerous coronaviruses newly jumping to humans can be: a warning that, in hindsight, all but announced the COVID-19 pandemic.
