7 questions · Geography
Saxony-Anhalt lies in the middle of Germany and has around 2.2 million inhabitants. The capital is Magdeburg on the Elbe, where the landmark also stands: Magdeburg Cathedral, the oldest Gothic cathedral on German soil. Emperor Otto the Great, who once made the city his favourite seat, is buried there.
The state is famous for Lutherstadt Wittenberg. There, in 1517, Martin Luther is said to have nailed his 95 theses to the door of the castle church, triggering the Reformation: an event that split and changed Europe. Wittenberg and Eisleben, where Luther was born and died, are UNESCO World Heritage today.
The Elbe flows through Saxony-Anhalt, and the state has as many World Heritage sites as almost any other: the Bauhaus in Dessau, the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm and the old town of Quedlinburg with its more than 1,300 half-timbered houses.
Did you know that the Nebra Sky Disc was found here? Buried some 3,600 years ago, it is considered the oldest known concrete depiction of the night sky anywhere in the world.
