10 questions · Geography
Saxony lies in the east of Germany and has around 4.1 million inhabitants. The capital is Dresden, long called the “Florence on the Elbe” for its baroque splendour; that is what the state is famous for. The Zwinger, the Semper Opera and the Royal Palace all stand close together there.
The landmark is the Frauenkirche in Dresden. In February 1945 it burnt out after the bombing raids and collapsed; the ruin lay for decades as a memorial. Only after reunification was it rebuilt with donations from around the world and reconsecrated in 2005: some 3,800 original stones sit in their old places again, standing out dark against the pale sandstone.
The Elbe flows through Saxony, and the coat of arms shows a green crown of rue across black and gold bars. To the east and south the state borders Poland and the Czech Republic; between them lies the Elbe Sandstone Mountains with the Bastei rocks.
Did you know that Europe's first porcelain manufactory was founded in Meissen in 1710? Its crossed swords are the oldest trademark still in use in the world.
