Schleswig-Holstein
8 questions · Geography
Schleswig-Holstein is Germany's northernmost state and the only one bordering two seas: the North Sea to the west and the Baltic to the east. Around 2.95 million people live between marshland, hedgerows and fjords. The capital is Kiel, known for Kiel Week, the largest sailing event in the world.
The state's landmark, however, stands in Lübeck: the Holsten Gate with its two round towers, for centuries the city gate of the mighty Hanseatic city and familiar to older Germans from the former 50-mark note. Lübeck was the head of the Hanseatic League: Baltic trade was directed from here.
The coat of arms bears two blue lions and a red nettle leaf, the symbols of the two parts of the state. To the north it borders Denmark, and that closeness still shows: a Danish minority and the Frisian community live in the region.
Did you know that the North Sea uncovers the Wadden Sea here twice a day; a national park and World Natural Heritage site you can walk across barefoot, guided by a mudflat warden?
